Lines can create illusions of movement and depth. Often this requires the use of repetition to create eye movement. Lines that do not overlap tend to create a flat, planar motion that proceeds across the page. Lines that cross each other to form complex intersecting patterns create a greater sense of depth. These effects can be amplified by controlling the weight, value, and transparency of the marks. Wide, opaque lines add density, slowing movement and compressing space, while thinner more transparent lines appear to move more actively through a deeper and more atmospheric space.
